EPL: Neville Alonso Must Sign Experience
London Afrik24 — Gary Neville has told Xabi Alonso to scrap Chelsea’s youth-focused transfer model if he wants to succeed at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on his latest podcast, the pundit argued that the incoming manager needs to prioritize senior leadership over potential to fix a squad that has become physically and mentally fragile.
Neville believes the spine of the team is currently too “inexperienced” to compete for the top four. While he praised the technical ability of the midfield trio—Caicedo, Enzo, and Lavia—and noted the talent among the “fizzy wingers,” insisting that the club’s policy of only signing players under 23 is a fundamental error.
To bridge the gap, Neville identified four specific areas where Alonso must demand proven, veteran talent.
Neville concluded that a focused investment of a couple hundred million in these specific roles—funded by selling off fringe players—would transform Chelsea into a competitive force almost overnight.
He stressed that without adding “strength and physicality” to the core of the pitch, Alonso will struggle to instill the necessary spirit and togetherness required to climb back up the Premier League table.
