Unity Cup Glory: Azeez Rewrites History in Super Eagles’ Victory Against Zimbabwe
London Afrk24 – What a dream debut for Femi Azeez!
The Millwall winger absolutely stole the spotlight in London last night, leading an experimental Super Eagles side to a 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and securing a spot in the 2026 Unity Cup final.
By finding the back of the net, Azeez etched his name into Nigerian football folklore, officially becoming the 62nd player to score on their international debut for the Super Eagles.
Match Highlights & Breakdown
Under the guidance of Coach Eric Chelle, a heavily reconstructed Nigerian side—featuring seven debutants—displayed incredible chemistry despite having only two full training sessions together.
Nigeria came out pressing high right from the whistle, resulting in an early breakthrough in the 5th minute.
Captain Terem Moffi tee’d up Azeez at the top of the 18-yard box, and the debutant clinically slotted it home before the Zimbabwean defense could even settle.
As Zimbabwe pushed forward chasing an equalizer in the second half, they left gaps in the back.
In the 63rd minute, Moffi turned provider yet again, driving down the left flank and cutting a sharp ball back into the box for Azeez to fire in his brace to secure the cushion.
While Zimbabwe pushed hard to get back into the match, their final ball repeatedly let them down, allowing a resolute, fresh-faced Nigerian backline to keep a clean sheet.
What’s Next: The Super Eagles will now march confidently into the Unity Cup Final this coming Saturday, where Coach Chelle will look to keep this experimental momentum rolling.
