PDP Faction Clears Abdulrahman, Anyanwu for Top Seats Ahead of Sunday Convention

The internal leadership structure of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) took a definitive shape on Monday as the screening sub-committee cleared Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed and Senator Samuel Anyanwu to retain their roles as National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.

Both men emerged as the sole candidates for their positions during a screening exercise conducted by the faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The high-stakes screening, held in the Wuse district of Abuja, signaled a consolidation of power for the current National Working Committee (NWC) members.

Alongside the top two leaders, several other key officers were cleared to retain their seats unopposed.

These include National Organising Secretary Hon. Umar Bature, National Legal Officer Ajibade Kamaldeen, Youth Leader Ambassador Ibrahim Bala, National Women Leader Prof. Ogunshe Adenike, and National Publicity Officer Jungudo Haruna Mohammed.

A vibrant atmosphere took over the venue as supporters, dressed in various party regalia, gathered to cheer on the aspirants.

The exercise serves as a critical precursor to the party’s National Convention scheduled for this Sunday.

This renewed push for a fresh convention follows a recent Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the 2025 Ibadan PDP Convention, effectively resetting the party’s leadership clock and forcing this weekend’s emergency gathering.

Addressing the 20 aspirants present out of the 22 vying for various offices, the Chairman of the National Convention Screening Sub-committee, Rt. Hon. Kingsley Chinda, described the lack of opposition against Abdulrahman and Anyanwu as a resounding vote of confidence.

Chinda noted that the leadership had successfully navigated the party through periods of significant internal turbulence and crisis, proving their capability to provide stable direction.

While acknowledging the “unopposed” status of the frontline candidates, Chinda emphasized that the committee would not bypass standard procedures, maintaining that the panel remains committed to verifying all relevant documentation to ensure full compliance with party guidelines, promising a process rooted in justice, fairness, and openness.

The committee chairman further commended the returning officers for what he described as creditably serving both the party and the nation, urging them to maintain their momentum as a robust opposition, stressing the need for the PDP to remain a constructive force in engaging the ruling party.

The screening process is slated to continue this Friday to finalize the list of delegates and candidates before the Sunday showdown, our correspondent reports.
