Plateau, Tearfund Partner to Boost Public Health, Economy

Jos Afrik24 – The Plateau State Government has entered into a strategic partnership with Tearfund through a Memorandum of Understanding designed to harness the economic potential of solid waste and promote sustainable environmental management throughout the State.

Unveiling the initiative during the launch of the Solid Waste Management Framework in Jos, on Tuesday, the collaboration seeks to convert local waste management into a functional economic driver intended to directly benefit an estimated two million residents across 11 local government areas.

During the launch, Tearfund Country Director Mrs. Regina Afiemo pointed to the vast untapped possibilities within the sector, noting that the global waste economy represents a $4.5 billion opportunity.

Afiemo explained that to effectively manage waste successfully measures will be put in place to turn environmental challenges into economic wealth, protects public health, and creates new jobs, warning that neglected waste creates severe ecological and social hazards.

To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, which launched its Nigerian operations in 2021 and is scheduled to run through 2030, Afiemo called on the Plateau State Government to honor its commitments by delivering the necessary counterpart funding.
